If cold weather and heavy rain that was experienced during the winter have caused small cracks to form in your property's asphalt patio, learn how to repair the damaged areas by completing the following steps. Once the cracks have been eliminated, apply sealer to the patio's surface to keep it protected from further damage.

Materials

  • push broom
  • water hose
  • bucket of soapy water
  • scrub brush
  • cold asphalt patch
  • mixing stick
  • small shovel
  • trowel
  • tamping tool
  • vinyl tarps
  • asphalt sealer
  • paint roller, frame, and handle

Clean The Patio

Use a broom to sweep up any debris that is on the patio's surface. Spray the patio with a strong stream of water to eliminate any asphalt particles that are stuck inside of the cracks in the patio's surface. If there are stains on portions of the patio, remove them with soapy water and a scrub brush. Rinse away soapy residue once the patio is clean and wait for the asphalt to dry.

Prepare The Patch And Fill Cracks

Mix a container of cold asphalt patch until it is an even consistency. Cold patch is ready to be used immediately and does not need any other materials added to it. Use a small shovel to add the patch to the damaged portions of the patio. Smooth out the patch with the flat side of a trowel. Press a tamping tool down firmly against the surface of each repaired area. The tool will flatten the asphalt so that it is firmly compacted. Wait for the patch to harden. This may take a full day.

Add Sealer To The Patio's Surface

Cover the portions of the ground that are adjacent to the patio with vinyl tarps so that asphalt sealer doesn't accidentally spill on them. Dip a paint roller into the container of sealer and evenly coat it. Move the roller across the patio in straight lines, beginning in one corner. Continue adding more sealer to the roller before applying it to the patio. Once the patio is covered completely, wait a day or two for its surface to dry.

If anyone will be entering your property, set up a sign next to the patio to prevent them from walking on the wet surface. Once the sealer has dried, remove the tarps from the ground. The patio will look great and will be protected from damage associated with cold weather or large amounts of moisture.
